Narrative description of Project:

Golem is part of the region of Kurvelesh and lies in its southwestern part. It is the most far away and highest village in Gjirokastra, with an altitude of over 1100 m above sea level which makes it the highest in Kurvelesh. Golem is bordered by 6 villages in 4 districts: from the south and southeast, respectively with Zhulat and Kolonja of Gjirokastra district; from the north with Progonati and Gusmar of Tepelena district; from the west with Kuçi in the district of Vlora and from the southwest with Fterren in the district of Saranda. It is located on a small plain, surrounded by a crown of high mountains. The mountain range is divided by two deep gorges, full of streams and abyss. Golem has had problems with electricity, while the lack of water is permanent and makes it difficult to survive in the village. The FEASIBILITY STUDY & DETAILED DESIGN OF WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM, GOLËM VILLAGE, GJIROKASTËR funded by AKUM aims to improve the quality and sustainability of water supply and consequently to improve living conditions, raise public health standards and promote economic growth in the country.

Project Objectives:

The purpose of this service is to draw up a Design Study for the construction / reconstruction of the Water Supply network and all its integral components:

  • construction of a new main line with a length of 1321m HDPE DE 90 PN10,
  • construction of a new distribution network with a length of 3224 m,
  • construction of two new depots, one in the north-west and the other in the southeast of the area with a capacity of 50m3, as well as the construction of a pumping station near the depot in the southeast of Vezhisht,
  • construction of access roads to both depots,
  • rehabilitation of the existing Vezhisht reservoir and of the pumping station.

For the water supply of an area of 210 inhabitants, the alternation of two scenarios is intended:

Scenario I: The source of WS  will be the existing reservoir near the Vezhisht stream along with the intake work.

Scenario II: The source of WS  will be the existing chamber in the northwest of the village that is supplied by the river Vezhisht. This chamber does not provide water throughout the year but is thought to be used for certain periods of it.

The alternation of two scenarios is intended as the best solution, enabling the use of resources in the country to ensure a continuous and sustainable water supply.
